Chapter 13

Jones

W hat the hell, Jones?

Jones kept overthinking—a very Mallory trait—about the fact she’d just had sex with Brooke. She knew better than to get involved like that; she knew that it would only end up with both Brooke and Mallory mad at her. But Jones couldn’t control herself. There was something about Brooke that drove her wilder than anyone else Jones had ever been with before.

And that was saying a lot.

It wasn’t often that she overthought her sexual escapades. She wasn’t a heartless sleep-with-them-and-forget-them type, but she wasn’t an overthinker, either. Sex would be just sex, but sex with Brooke definitely wasn’t just sex. It was much more than that, whether Jones was ready to admit that or not.

As Jones finished cleaning the office after her wild afternoon, she heavily sighed as she plopped into the office chair. She needed a drink and a nap to reset and refocus her mind. Everything was so jumbled in her brain that she didn’t know how she’d ever get back on track.

Maybe we need to call the whole swap off.

Even though it had been her idea, Jones could admit she hadn’t thought the whole thing through. Swapping places with Mallory was so much easier when it was a simple class they would take for the other, and feelings for someone Jones shouldn’t be falling for weren’t involved. She wondered not for the first time how Mallory seemed to be handling the swap so well, and Jones was the one struggling. Jones often fancied herself the stronger twin, even though she knew that wasn’t fair to Mallory.

It had been Mallory that had stayed in the Cove to take care of their ailing grandparents. Mallory had cared for them and made sure their last days were comfortable in the nursing home. Jones had only visited a handful of times, hating herself more for that as the years since their passing went by. And her sister might not know it, but Jones knew it was Mallory who tracked down their birth mom to tell her about her parents’ passing. There was no doubt in her mind that Mallory was indeed the stronger twin, even if Mallory didn’t realize that.

Picking up her phone, Jones called Mallory. She needed to know if Mallory was as ready to call off the swap as she was. But when Mallory answered on the third ring, she sounded happier than Jones had heard her in years.

“Hey, sis.”

“Hey, Mal. You sound happy.”

“Well, I’m going ice skating at Rockefeller Center, so how can I be sad?” Mallory giggled, and it made Jones smile. It was refreshing to hear her sister so happy.

“I guess you have a point there.”

“You okay?” Of course, Mallory would know something was wrong.

“It’s nothing important. Just call me whenever you get a moment. No rush.”

“You sure? There’s still a little bit of time before our turn on the rink.”

“Our turn?”

“Emery’s here too,” Mallory stated matter-of-factly. For a split second, Jones wondered if there was more happening between Mallory and Emery than Mallory was letting on.
